  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: A view along Sherrard Street taken from its junction with Market Place. The trees on the left border one of Melton's most famous buildings – The Limes – demolished in 1932, and now the site of Woolworths. Just in front is a sign for 'A Coleman, tobacconist', a well-know shop which only closed in 2007.

Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0201.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: A view along Sherrard Street taken beside boundary wall of The Limes (now the site of Woolworths). On the far right is CS Smith grocers, and then the Post Office looking very imposing in what had once been a private house. The taller building next to it is Sharman and Ladbury ironmongers.

Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0202.

    Compare past and present.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: A wintry view along Sherrard Street looking towards Market Place. The building on the left will become the Post Office, but is still a private house. Next is CS SMith grocers, and then Lamberts Lane, which ran down to Burton Street. The building on the other side of the lane was later demolished, creating today's Burton Street junction.

Approx date: 1885. Image ref: MM0203.

    Compare past and present.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: Market Day on Sherrard Street, looking away from the town centre. The building on the left was demolished in the 1930s, when Windsor Street was created. The red-brick building in the centre of the photograph was the offices of Barkers; Solicitors and Clerks to the Urban District Council from its inception in 1894 to its demise in 1974.

Approx date: 1925. Image ref: MM0204.

    Compare past and present.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: A view along Sherrard Street with the Post Office on the right. The next-door premises of Sharman and Ladbury had expanded their agricultural engineering business by knocking down down The Wheatsheaf Inn in 1887. At the time of the photograph this building was a garage. It later became a Ford showroom.

Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0205.

    Compare past and present.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: A view along Sherrard Street, away from the town centre. The sign above the Black Swan Inn on the right can still be seen today. The white-faced building on the left is The Old Bishops Blaize, parts of which dated to the 14th century. It was demolished in 1964, making way for new premises built for Bowleys Jewellers and Opticians when they moved from the Barnes Block in the Market Place.

Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0206.

    Compare past and present.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: The building in the background with the impressive entrance and flag pole was 'The Elms'. Built in the 1790s, it was one of Melton's grandest private houses, with splendid and extensive gardens. The land and buildings were gradually sold. Elms Road and Oak Road were built on the grounds, and the telephone exchange on the site of the house, with shops on the Sherrard Street frontage.

Approx date: 1895. Image ref: MM0207.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: Looking along Sherrard Street, away from the town centre, the Primitive Methodist Church is on the left, up a steep flight of steps with a large schoolroom underneath. Known locally as the Prims Chapel, it was demolished in 1975, to be replaced by Melton's first supermarket; 'Sally Morlands'.

Approx date: 1935. Image ref: MM0208.

    Compare past and present.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: An Edwardian view of Sherrard Street looking towards the town centre. The green structure on the right is one of the town's public urinals, placed just outside the Methodist Church. It was said that church-goers could look down into it from the top of the chapel steps!

Approx date: 1905. Image ref: MM0209.

    Compare past and present.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: A carnival procession winds its way along Sherrard Street from the town centre, with one of the town's public urinals on the right, and The Marquis of Granby pub on the left. The first float is possibly a Stilton cheese-maker, the second belongs to Rowell and Son, boot-makers to the gentry, and later to the Duke of Windsor.

Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0210.

    Compare past and present.

Description: The south-side of Sherrard Street, with the town's urinal on the far right, and the Granby pub opposite. Sometimes called 'The Marquis of Granby, it was named after the third Duke of Rutland's eldest son; a distinguished officer who earned the respect of his soldiers by finding them employment when their service ended.

Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0211.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: A view from the bottom end of Sherrard Street towards Thorpe End. On the left is T Moore & Son's bakehouse and cafe. The trees border the large gardens of Parke House, owned by a family of local solicitors. The Constitutional Club is on the right, and in the far centre is the new Carnegie Library. But the other tower is a mystery, and must have been added by an over-enthusiastic postcard-colourer.

Approx date: 1915. Image ref: MM0212.

    Compare past and present.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: A view along Thorpe End with The Carnegie Library (now the town's museum) in the centre. McDonalds now occupies the cottage gardens on the right. The houses on the left stand just before the entrance to Enoch Evans Pork Pie Factory; built in 1860, closed in 1953 and demolished in 1963. It's now part of the Morrison's Supermarket site.

Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0213.

    Compare past and present.

  • Sherrard St: Image

Description: A view of the 'Carnegie Free Library' on Thorpe End, now the home of the town's museum. Beyond the small shop is Tuxford and Tebbitts' pork-pie and Stilton cheese factory, built in 1867 and still there today (although pies ceased to be made in 1966). Opened in 1904, the library was funded by Scottish-born American steel baron, Andrew Carnegie. It became the town's museum in 1977.

Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0214.
