  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A view along Melton Canal and footpath, towards Leicester Road runninmg from left to right in the distance. The canal was diverted along this 'cut' under pressure from the owner of Egerton Lodge, who didn't want his view spoilt by canal boats. The grounds beyond the road belonged to the Lodge. Today they're the site of the town's cricket ground. And just to the left will be the site of the Waterfield Swimming Baths.

Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0301.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A familiar view into Melton along Leicester Road taken from the canal bridge. The peaceful scene is a great contrast to the never-ending traffic which clogs the road today. The grounds of Egerton Lodge are on the left. The fields on the right are now occupied by tennis courts and beyond them, the town's park.

Approx date: 1905. Image ref: MM0302.

    Compare past and present.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A view of the bridge over the River Eye as Leicester Road enters the town, with the sheep dip on the opposite bank. Most of the buidings on the corner of Leicester Street and High Street remain little changed.

Approx date: 1920. Image ref: MM0303.

    Compare past and present.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A view of the Memorial Gardens, just below Egerton Lodge, taken from the bank of the River Eye. The gardens were purchased by The Town Estate in 1928. By this time the small conifers had acquired their distinctive 'tear-drop' shape. The Lodge became offices for the Melton Urban Council, and is now a retirement home.

Approx date: 1945. Image ref: MM0304.

    Compare past and present.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A view of Egerton Lodge and its formal gardens, taken from the opposite bank of the River Eye. The building on the right is Park House, erected in 1740 for the Reeve family. They sold it to the Earl of Wilton, who later commissioned the buiding on the left, now known as Egerton Lodge. The former Park House was demolished in 1928 to enable the construction of Wilton Road.

Approx date: 1900. Image ref: MM0305.

    Compare past and present.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: Leicester Road bridge with ducks swimming beside the sheep dip on the right. Egerton Lodge is on the far left, with Park House behind the trees. The stables to Egerton Lodge can just be seen on the far right. These were demolished soon after the Lodge was sold in 1928.

Approx date: 1940. Image ref: MM0306.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A view across the Leicester Road bridge away from town, with the cobbled-stone sheep dip on the left. The fields to the left are now Melton's sports ground. On the right are the grounds of Egerton Lodge – now the cricket ground. It's a striking contrast to today's traffic-polluted scene.

Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0307.

    Compare past and present.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: An idyllic and tranquil scene which will be familiar to most Meltonians, taken from the bank of the River Eye in Egerton Park, and looking towards Leicester Road Bridge, with St Mary's Church in the background.

Approx date: 1920. Image ref: MM0308.

    Compare past and present.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A charming and evocative image of rider and horse beside the bridge on a deserted Leicester Road. At this time the road turned sharp right into High Street as Wilton Road had not yet been built.

Approx date: 1920. Image ref: MM0309.

    Compare past and present.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A view from the town centre along High Street towards the junction with Leicester Road on the left. Egerton Lodge is in the background, with the servants' quarters on the right. This building was demolished in 1928 to make way for Wilton Road. Before then, traffic coming from Leicester to Asfordby, Nottingham and Scalford had to pass along High Street and then Nottingham Street.

Approx date: 1895. Image ref: MM0310.

    Compare past and present.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A view down High Street towards Egerton Lodge, with the George Hotel on the right. The horse-drawn wagons outside show that this was probably Market Day, with the farmers taking well-earned refreshment inside. The two fine properties further along the street were still private houses and often let out during the hunting season.

Approx date: 1900. Image ref: MM0311.

    Compare past and present.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A view up High Street from its junction with Leicester Road. On the left is the entrance to Egerton Lodge stables and coach house. Opposite is the White House, dating from the late 17th century. For many years this was occupied by a succession of doctors. Today it is the offices of Oldham Marsh Solicitors.

Approx date: 1905. Image ref: MM0312.

    Compare past and present.

  • Leicester Rd: Image

Description: A view up High Street with the George Hotel on the left, and the Bell Hotel straight ahead. Both hotels let out apartments to the gentry during the hunting season. Next to the Bell stands the impressive facade of Boots Chemists, who established their business here in 1890.

Approx date: 1900. Image ref: MM0313.
