Description: Melton from the south, with St Mary's Church in the background, taken from Burton Hill before any houses were built on the bottom part of Burton Road. On the right can be seen Toad Hall and Claret Lodge, as well as some low canal buildings.
Approx date: 1905. Image ref: MM0101.
Description: An aerial view taken from the church tower towards Burton Bridge, showing just two early motor cars where today there is a never-ending stream of traffic. The open fields in the background are now occupied by the town's largest employer; Pedigree Masterfoods.
Approx date: 1920. Image ref: MM0102.
Description: On the left is Framland House which was demolished in 1997. On the extreme right is Cardigan House, named after the 7th Earl of Cardigan (famous for the disastrous Charge of the Light Brigade) who hunted regularly in the area. Beau Brummell kept his horses here.
Approx date: 1905. Image ref: MM0103.
Description: Burton Street taken from the bridge. The thatched building on the extreme right was the Red Lion Inn, demolished in 1936 and then rebuilt as part of the adjacent Harborough Hotel. The Harborough's carriage entrance was filled in sometime during the 1950s.
Approx date: 1900. Image ref: MM0104.
Description: A view along Burton Street taken from beside the bridge. The Red Lion pub on the right looks newly thatched. Framland House is just out of the picture on the left. At this time it housed an antiques shop - the last few letters of the sign are just visible.
Approx date: 1915. Image ref: MM0105.
Description: A distinctive view of Burton Street taken from the bridge. The elegant late-Georgian and Regency tall houses, together with the trees, give it an air of gracefulness. (You wouldn't walk down the middle of the road today!)
Approx date: 1900. Image ref: MM0106.
Description: The building on the left is well known today as 'The Anne of Cleves' restaurant. At the time of this photograph it was called 'The Priory', and had been a private house since 1760. The building is one of the Melton's oldest landmarks, with a rich history stretching back to medieval times.
Approx date: 1905. Image ref: MM0107.
Description: A view of The Bede Houses, opposite the church. Built in 1640, and remodeled in 1891, they also housed the town museum for nearly 100 years. At the back is a delightful walled garden; a peaceful oasis in an ever-busier town centre.
Approx date: 1900. Image ref: MM0108.
Description: A view up Burton Street with today's Anne of Cleve's restaurant on the left. On the right, beyond the tree, is the entrance to Beeby's Yard; one of a number of livery stables providing hunters for hire to members of the local hunts. Beyond it is Crawfurd House, once the Three Horseshoes pub.
Approx date: 1910. Image ref: MM0109.
Description: A view up Burton Street from beside the church. On the right is The Old Club; built about 1790. For most of the 19th century it contained apartments let to the hunting fraternity. Just beyond is the George and Dragon Inn, demolished in 1889 to make way for Colles Hall.
Approx date: 1889. Image ref: MM0110.
Description: A view along Burton Street towards the bridge. On the left is Colles Hall, and beyond it the vicarage, built in 1760. After the Second World War this building became The Blakeney Institute, and was used as church rooms until the opening of the Samworth Centre in 2000.
Approx date: 1905. Image ref: MM0111.
Description: A view along Burton Street towards the bridge, just visible in the far background. The building on the left is The George and Dragon Inn, before it was demolished in 1889 to make way for Colles Hall. The children following the horse and cart may have come from the Fair.
Approx date: 1885. Image ref: MM0112.
Description: Some wonderful old motor cars – and no obvious traffic markings – in this view along Burton Street taken from the bridge. The half-timbered building on the left is Melton Garage (previously Quorn Hunt Motor Garage). The taller building just before it is pork-pie makers, Sutton Bros.
Approx date: 1930. Image ref: MM0113.
